Week 14 PLN

4/27/17
This week I wanted to focus more on some apps that I could use in my Physical Education class. Prior to this, I only really knew about "Team Shake" which would help me make teams for my classes. I looked on SPARK PE because I trust this group very much with different Physical Education information. The first app that I saw was MyFitnessPal. I had used this during my undergrad and totally forgot about it. I hope to be able to use this in a health classroom and teach the students how to use this so they can log their exercise and keep them healthy outside the classroom.

Week 14 Reflection

4/27/17
This week, I attended the 4:30 class and watched two presentations. One of them was Marin who taught us how to use Stop Motion. Stop Motion is an app that can be used on a phone or tablet to take pictures of something and string them together in a movie sequence. Marin focused on claymation, but since I forgot my clay at school, I used some Pop! figures and made a scene that way. I enjoyed using this app, but struggle to find a good and realistic use for it in my classroom.
Maureen went next and taught the class how to use Google Forms and the ways that you could have it score for you. I have very good experience with Google Forms and have been using it for my final exams this year.

Week 13 PLN

4/20/17
This week, I looked at Google Earth. I used this in a lesson before to show students how the Marathon got its name. I had created a lesson that showed them on Google Maps that Marathon is 26.2 miles away from Athens, Greece. The story is that there was a man who ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens and delivered his message of the attack and died in front of the senate. I hope to use this in the future by finding elevations or distances to different places and set up a goal chart to see if students could make it to that destination. We would track this using MyFitnessPal.

Week 13 Reflection

4/20/17
Meghan used her time this week to show us how to use and implement Class Dojo into our own classrooms. She showed us how she uses it and how she assigns points to a number of different categories. Sometimes she will give points for on task behavior, and others she will give points to the class for standing quietly in line. There is a function on class dojo that allows you to take attendance so that you can give points to a whole class, except those who are absent for the day. Students are given the opportunity to choose which "monster" they want as their avatar. Meghan uses a reward system where the students can turn in their points to earn different things throughout the school year. We discussed if students get too competitive during class dojo, and the answer from multiple people was "no." The students were just focused on getting as many points for themselves as they could.

Week 12 Reflection

4/13/17
This week, Tes taught the class how to use and code with html. It is a difficult topic to try and teach through a we binary, but Tes did a great job. She had some trouble at the start when we were changing the background color but she quickly rebounded and got things running smoothly. Coding with html is something that I want to explore more deeply, and I would never have known that without the presentation from Tes.

Week 12 PLN

4/20/17
My PLN this week focuses on budget cuts. I know a bit about them and have experienced them in their worst form a few weeks ago. I have lost my job next year due to budget cuts. I wanted to be able to know what was happening in the state of CT and more importatnly in my district so I decided to look up where all of the money went. The link below talks about how the money that the state used to give all districts is going to shift and change. Unfortunately for me, my district will lose all of the funding that it used to get from the state.

Week 11 PLN

4/11/17
This week, I had a faculty meeting where we were told that Google was changing their sites format to something a little more user friendly. This was met by groans from some of the faculty that have created numerous websites before and now have to create a new one. However, upon looking at it, the new Google sites seems to be a very easy to use way to create a website. I looked up a video that gives a walk through tutorial on YouTube. The video walks you through how to drag and drop widgets on to your new website and shows how you how to help your students create a portfolio that they can use through this website creator. This way, students will be able to document their progress throughout their high school career.

The video that I watched is listed here.

Week 11 Reflection

This week we got to hear presentations from both Mike and Martin. Mike went first and taught the class how to use the online Quiz maker, Socrative. Many people use Kahoot in their classrooms, but Socrative gives you the opportunity to do everything that you can in Kahoot, plus a lot more. I plan to use this in my health classroom for quick exit slips so the students can instantly know what they learned.
Martin showed us another type of coding website where there is a very easy to use interface with pre made commands. This website was very much like scratch, but there are very good and helpful tutorial videos to go along with the site. Martin's quick mobile app creation was a great way to test our ability to follow along and use the coding interface.

PLN Week 10

4/4/17

http://www.pecentral.org/lessonideas/pedometer/pedometerlessonndex.html

This week I took a look into the uses of pedometers in physical education. I have a set of the at my disposal, but I have never thought to use them in class before. I came up with the idea to use them as they take the PACER the next time and try to calculate how.many miles they run while taking the test. Hopefully, using some of these lesson ideas, I can create something that will be useful for use in my classes.

Week 10 Reflection

This week was my presentation week, and how nervous I was. I had a lot of things to show and not a lot of time to show them. The day prior to class, I had heard good feedback about one of the apps that I use called Team Shake. I worked to try and get this into my presentation, but I couldn't find a way to gethe my cell phone screen to cast to my computer. This was a weaker part of my lesson, but I think it was helpful for many of the membershower of the class. I also tried to link my teaching to things that were relevant to the students in the class. I remembered Meghan mention that one of her students spoke another language so I thought about Google Translate. This was also useful for Martin as a Spanish teacher so I think I reached both of them with that extension.

Ashley then taught Google Read and Write. This is an amazing Google extension and is valuable for students who need help in the area of reading a writing.

Week 9 PLN

3/23/17
I found an app on google chrome recently called Awesome Schreenshot. This extension allows you to take a picture of any part of your screen, or the desktop and let's you edit the picture in any way that you need to, right from the extension. You then have multiple options of saving it online somewhere, or saving it right to your computers drive. This is a mini photoshop through the Internet and could be a very useful too for me if I need to do explanations of a skill in a step by step fashion. I can take a picture of my screen at different points in a video so I can point things out to students by annotating the pictures and posting them on my LMS.

Week 8 PLN

3/9/17
I have been researching things for my presentation in the coming weeks and have come across the Google Chrome App called Google Keep. This allows a post it not type of thing to show up in the top right corner of the webpage where you can keep notes and such from something that you read online that will save directly to the drive. This is a great tool for use in research for students and I will be putting this into my presentation.

Week 9 Reflection

3/23/17
Tonight we got to hear Ashley C give her lesson on Schoology. Ashley was very well versed on the subject and made every effort to teach us as much as she could in the short amount of time she was allotted. I was impressed with the functionality of Schoology and would strongly consider using it if I were ever teaching solely a school Health Education course. The LMS does everything that Moodle does, and some things it does even better because it is a little easier to follow. I liked the types of quizzes you can create in Schoology and they are much easier to create than in Moodle. Ashley did a great job on her presentation and I am beginning to get a littel nervous for my presentation next week.

Week 8 Reflection

3/9/17
During this week's class, we did a lot of reflection typeso of activities where we had to share and examine things. We first looked over the presentation schedule and I saw that I was slotted in the second week of presentations. I feel like I will do well on my lesson, but I am a little nervous about it as I have never taught a lesson online before. I think everyone can say the same thing from our class. We then looked at a job posting for and Ed tech position and it mad me feel good knowing that once I was done with my degree I could potentially get a job in the field. Next, we shared PLN's and worked on an activity with Ted Ed. The activity helped teach us how to design a video and insert questions at end. During this class we also talked about our 10 question feedback form to see how things were going there. The general consensus was that we enjoyed having someone else's input on our moodles.

Upon looking at the TechTips blog that Dr Sponder gave the link to at the end of class this week, I found something called Symbaloo. It looks as if you can make a grid with any number of tiles that you want and can emded them directly onto a page in a website. This may be something that I  incorporate into my Moodle at the top or bottom to keep all of my resources neatly in one place. I look forward to playing with this program in the coming weeks.

Week 7 Reflection

3/2/17
Tonight's class we shared our homework responses that had to do with the periodic table of technology. I shared my homework findings about Pinterest and found that there are so many game ideas that I have begun to integrate into my classes. We talked about how our brochures were coming and we were reminded that they are due at the beginning of class next week. Dr. Sponder then showed us Wikispaces and showed a quick tutorial of how to create one of those websites. We then signed up for presentation times and listed a 1st second and third choice. Lastly, we looked into online courses to take for free about different things that pertain to our areas of expertise./

This week, I decided to look up different strategies for giving and putting together a webinar. With the upcoming project in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to start looking for ideas that could help me develop the best presentation that I can. This website had a main focus on learning who your target audience is and focusing on what your webinar's main goal is. There is a section on ideas such as using surveys, social networks, and forums to help guide your webinar and make it as effective as it can be. The website is listed below...

Week 6 Reflection

2/23/27
This week, we spent a majority of the time looking through all of our Moodles to see how they were coming along. I volunteered to show my Moodle and was happy to get all of the feedback that I got from the class. I changed many of the things before the end of the class, and my Moodle looks much easier to read. The idea that Mike gave about segmenting my units was perfect for making the whole website look more professional and user friendly. It has also helped me see which areas I need to focus more time on.
I also gave another tutorial on how to create a feedback form in Google Forms. I have given a tutorial like this for the class before, but I have found that I rather enjoy teaching through the use of an online medium. I am very excited for the next project which will involve us teaching a lesson online.

Today I watched a past webinar from SPARK PE that taught the viewers how to effectively use Google Drive as a Physical Educator. I have been using Google Drive for quite a while as both of the schools that I have worked in have been Google Schools. I really enjoy using Google Drive, but I only know the bare bones of how to create docs, spreadsheets, slides, and forms. During the webinar, the presenter showed how to use many useful apps within Google Chrome. She demonstrated an app called Screencastify where you can cast your screen and send it straight to Youtube. This app will be very helpful in the future if I choose to teach an online class. In total, I have downloaded 10 new extensions to Google Chrome from this webinar and plan to use all of them in the future.

Week 5 Reflection

2/16/17
Today in class, we were assigned a classmate to check our Moodle and we are supposed to check theirs weekly. We created a Google Form for our partners to complete where they have to fill out their name and anyou feedback that they have. After that, we took a look at our videos that we had to upload from our phones to YouTube. Each person had to talk about what their video was about and how they created it for their website. Lastly, we started discussions about what topics we were considering for our online presentation. I thought about giving a demonstration of the apps that I use in class and how I use them to create a comfortable classroom environment during game play.

2/12/17
This week I decided to head back to SPARK and find another webinar. I found a webinar that was about how to handle large classes when you don't have much time to see them. I thought that this was going to give me some good class management strategies or games that I could use for the large group, but they gave me a lot of different ways to create a family PE night with the missing time that I have in class. The webinar also went over a bunch of scarf tossing activities that don't take up much space, and are very easy for students to figure out. I did not really feel like I got out of the webinar what I was looking for so I will have to try and find one for next week.

Week 4 reflection

2/9/17
Today in class we went over everybody's Moodles and check to see where everybody stood as far as the project went. Most of us seem to be in the same situation where we have everything laid out and we need to start putting our information into the Moodle. I had asked my question about the banners for each of the units and got my answer. Upon looking at everybody else is moodle I feel like I'm in a good spot with mine but still feel like I could use some more time manipulating the Moodle and learning how it works. We also went over the quizzes and how one of the students was having trouble putting her information into the quizzes. I had already created some multiple choice quiz his myself and had a little bit of trouble editing the quiz after it had already been made. I enjoy being able to ask questions during the class two other students who have used the software more than me I feel it is very helpful when trying to learn to do things yourself.

2/1/17
This week, my most interesting PLN is Coach's Eye. It is an application that is used on any mobile device that can be used for coaches and athletes to analyze their performances on the application itself. With a subscription, coaches can create their team roster and invite their players to the roster via email or phone number. They can also send messages to their entire team through the app so that the players/students can come prepared for practice on any given day. You can draw on the video with a mobile device with a touch screen to highlight different things you want the athletes to be aware of. I could definitely see myself using this in my coaching career if I can find a way to regularly implement this into my practice. With a $120 subscription, it is important that I know I will use it many times throughout the season.

Week 3 Reflection

2/1/17
Today in class, we took a look at all of the student work so far. First, we looked at all of our blogs themselves and checked to see that they were all going well and that all of the posts were there. There were a couple of students who had to make some changes due to the colors of their backgrounds and text. I kept mine simple, as I don't like a whole lot of colors because it makes things very difficult to read.
Next, we went through our Moodles and checked what all of our topics were and what we had added to those over the week. Dr Sponder taught us how to create banners for each of our topic headings and one for our course heading. He has asked us to put a banner on each one of these pieces before next class. He gave us a couple of options on how to make them, but I think I am going to stick with completing this task on Microsoft Word because I am very comfortable with the program as I have been using it for a good portion of my life.
We then went on to rubistar to check out some of the rubrics that are available to us for our Moodles. We have been instructed to have at least 3 rubrics somewhere in our Moodles. They can be foreached any assignment and they can be changed as necessary. I look forward to working with these new pieces of technology, especially Rubistar because I have never used it before. Also, we learned about EdShelf, which is a way for us to keep all of our apps in one place which seems like a really fun website to explore.

Week 2 Reflection

1/27/17
This week in class, we looked over in great detail things that other students have done with their moodle classes in the past semesters. We discussed what kinds of things should be in our moodles and how we would go about putting them into the course itself. We then briefly went through each of our developing moodles to see what everyone was thinking about teaching and the topics that they chose to post information about. We were shown again how to change the sections from weeks to topics and how to name them afterwards.

I personally was introduced to a lot of new technology including Screencast-o-matic, Voki, Padlet, and Rubistar. I have yet to find good uses for these things in my classroom, but I anticipate to find a way to put each of these pieces of technology into action before the semester is over.

We then finished by discussing the ID plan and how we needed to write the plan to support our moodle. Dr. Sponder gave us an outline for this homework assignment with all of the information that we needed to know and we are supposed to copy and paste it to Word and save it to a PDF to submit to the class.

I attended a webinar today on Pickleball through SPARK PE and their website. They offer many free webinars on different subjects in Physical Education which was unknown to me. I was very surprised to find how many webinars there are for Physical Education. In my mind, Physical Education was a hard subject to teach over a webinar because of the physical nature of the class. The webinar went over the rules of the game and how it was a good bridge between a badminton and tennis unit. A brief history was also discussed and how the game came to be in existence. The webinar also went over a method of teaching that I learned while at CCSU for my undergrad. The tactical games method gives students who are not playing at any particular time jobs to complete as they wait for their time on the court. The approach also sets up the class in a game-skill-game order so students are bookending skill development with gameplay.

As I researched scholarly articles for Physical Education, I came across an article on http://www.livestrong.com/ that talked about all of the benefits of Physical Education in schools. Most of these ideas were ones that I had known previously but it is an article that I feel more people should know about. In my experience, I haven't seen Physical Education expanding in schools across the country, and it is usually one of the first things to get cut from a budget. For example, in my school only freshman and sophomores are required to take Physical Education. If more schools and administrators were aware of this information, then Physical Education programs across the country might be able to expand. The article touches on the physical, academic, and social benefits of Physical Education.

Week 1 Reflection

1/19/17
Tonight in EDT352 we discussed all of the things that are required of us during our time in the Spring semester of 2017. First, we went through the syllabus together where Dr. Sponder highlighted the course projects, rules and regulations, late passes, and office ours that are available to us.

We dove into the blog fairly early into the class. I had some significant trouble logging in and creating a blog on this site in the classroom, but I had much more success at home on my PC. We are required to write a blog response on the things that we learned in the class every day, and then we are required to respond to a blog post of someone else before the next class.

After the blog, we jumped into the Moodle. Dr. Sponder has created a moodle page for each of us and he brought us through the settings and showed us how to change the weeks to topics. He explained that this was going to be a "course" that we would be teaching. I have chosen to link it to my teaching as a Physical Education teacher and have each unit be one of those that I teach at Avon High School.

Finally, we went through how to use WebEx to access the meeting room for our online class. I went through this training last night during EDT 512 so this was review for me. I am anxious and excited to get started with this class and program, and I hope to learn many things that I can transfer and use in my classroom.
